A new app inspired by gardening culture in Italy
Inspired by the tradition of passing gardening know-how down through the generations in Italy, Grydan wanted to create an app designed to help home gardeners succeed. “You have to know the right moment to plant seeds,” says Grillo. “You need to know how much to water and how the climate will affect your vegetables.”
Working in an IBM Bluemix environment, Grydan developed a solution that incorporates the Weather Company Data for IBM Bluemix service to analyze weather data in a user’s region and provide key planting information and recommendations. “In the moment you’re using our app, it pulls in historic data about temperature in your area,” says Grillo. “It will suggest the kind of crops that are viable in your location given the anticipated temperature range from seeding to harvest time.”
Grydan runs its app on Bluemix hosting infrastructure in an IBM Cloud data center in Europe, providing the offering to users at no cost. “We’re hearing feedback that it’s helping gardeners choose the kind of vegetables to grow,” says Grillo. “Users are surprised to find that an app can provide knowledge similar to older gardening books or people in the region.”
Speed, scale and cost control
As newcomers to cloud technology, Grydan’s developers were impressed by the Bluemix platform’s ease of use. “We set up our Bluemix environment in seconds,” says Grillo. “You can start coding right away.”
The Grydan team also appreciates the scale, convenience and cost-effectiveness of the Weather Company Data for IBM Bluemix service. “We’re using a huge amount of historical weather data in our app that would have previously been very expensive to acquire,” says Grillo. “It also would have been extremely difficult, if not impossible, to collect in the past, and now it’s there at our fingertips.”
After working with the IBM Cloud platform to launch its app, Grydan anticipates incorporating the technology in future projects. “We’re now looking at cloud infrastructure as something more that we can offer our customers,” says Grillo.
